NMDC

The National Metallurgical Development Centre is a parastatal of the Federal Government of Nigeria which is under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. It was established in 1973 as the Materials Testing Division of the defunct Nigerian Steel Development Authority (NSDA), to specially handle the analysis of raw materials for the then proposed steel plants.

It later metamorphosed into the administratively autonomous Metallurgical Research and Tests Division of the National Steel Council,after the abrogation of the Decree establishing the NSDA, with a broader scope to carry out Research and Development activities in metallurgical industrial processes. The name National Metallurgical Development Centre was adopted in 1987 and the Centre was given legal backing by Decree No. 50 of 1992. MISSION STATEMENT OF NMDC

To play a decisive role in developing and adapting metallurgical processes for economic production of steel and other engineering alloys, including upgrading the qualities of Nigerian ores for steel and other metallurgical production including the smelting and refining of local ores.
